Common signs and symptoms

Jaw-related symptoms can affect comfort, movement, and daily routines. They can also overlap with other conditions.

Everyone has occasional aches or jaw sounds. When symptoms persist, return often, or interfere with eating, speaking, or sleep, an evaluation may help clarify what is going on. The list below is a starting point—not a diagnosis.

Common TMJ and TMD symptoms

Jaw & Facial Pain

  • Aching pain in and around your ear
  • Tenderness in the jaw muscles
  • Pain while chewing or yawning
  • A tired, fatigued feeling in your face
  • Swelling on the sides of your face

Headaches & Neck Pain

  • Frequent morning headaches
  • Migraine-like or recurring head pain
  • Stiffness or pain in the neck
  • Pain radiating to the shoulders or back
  • Tension headaches that do not respond well to medication

Functional Issues

  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Jaw locking in the open or closed position
  • A sudden change in how your upper and lower teeth fit together
  • Clenching or grinding teeth (bruxism), especially at night

Ear Symptoms

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • A sensation of fullness or stuffiness in the ears
  • Earaches without the presence of an infection
  • Dizziness or vertigo
